Enduring Style: Out of Africa

I just took a trip down memory lane @ Collage of Life today with a J. Peterman catalog. I first came across this great brand in the 80's and lost sight of it when we moved overseas. I recently came across it again and was delighted to see it is still going strong. It makes me want to pack my bags and wander the world. It also reminds me of those classic movie moments in movies like Out of Africa. Take Africa, Meryl Streep, Robert Redford, Klaus Maria Brandauer, beautiful scenery, a wonderful story, a classic traveling wardrobe and you have magic.

In 1985, Out of Africa won seven Oscar's including Best Picture
Best Writing- Screenplay, Best Music-Original Score , Best Director,
Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction-Set Decoration and Best Sound.

Here a few classic Meryl moments....

The White Shirt According to Nina Garcia

I had a look thru Nina Garcia's book,

Nina is Marie Claire's Fashion Director
and Project Runway's judge.

I liked her White Hot tips
for dressing in a man's shirt.

* Keep it as close to a man's version as possible.
*No pearl buttons, no novelty buttons, no covered buttons.
*The best buttons look like (or are) mother-of-pearl,
and are sewn on a thick, double plated placket.
They should be sewn on on with
cross-stitching.
*Keep it basic. Go classic cotton or fine linen.

She also mentions great moment in men's white shirts:
* 1953 Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday.
*1956 Elizabeth Taylor in The Giant.
*1990: Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.
*1994 Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction.
*1998 Sharon Stone on the red carpet
at the 70th Annual Academy Awards.

I think, whichever way you look at it, there is always room for a few
white shirts in a woman's wardrobe. Whichever one suits you best.

Which white shirt do you like??
I think Elizabeth Taylor looks great,
I only wish I had a waist like that too :)

Any white shirts lingering in your closet ?
I have a few in all shapes and sizes.
My favourite is an oversized
one I purchased 20 years ago.
Still going strong!

Enduring Style: Candice Bergen

I grew up watching Candice Bergen.
In the movies and in magazines...you never had to look far.

I don't think I will ever forget her,
Jack Nicholson and Art Garfunkel
in the film, Carnal Knowledge...so scandalous at the time!

In films and out she always speaks her mind.

A classic beauty...

Through the years she has stayed steadfast and strong.

It has been a pleasure to watch....

The 'Boyfriend' Shirt

I had an 80's throwback moment today.
I found the perfect silk 'boyfriend' shirt.
Just like the one I purchased all those
years ago and could never let go of.
I love moments like this :)
It is a midnight blue matt silk 'boyfriend' blouse by Equipment.
Flap pockets, curved hem and a pleat at the back.
I saw it last month and have been thinking about it ever since.
It is a bit more than I wanted to spend but I somehow managed
a million rationalisations while I was in the dressing room.

You can dress it up, dress it down, wear it out, wear it in.
It can be worn all year round and  it goes with this and it goes with that.
Best of all, it goes with jeans. Just throw
a cashmere sweater over this baby and it doesn't matter
how old you are....it is going to feel and look fab.

Now all I need to do is pick up another colour :)

FYI
Carine Roitfeld's (last image) husband created
the label in the 80's and is relaunching the brand and the blouse.

Vogue, Street Chic, Denim and Livia Firth

A quick browse thru Vogue UK
and a few questions for you.

A softened version of Victoria Beckham
for this months Vogue cover,
what do you think?
Does it work?

From the 'Street Chic' Gallery at Vogue UK.
The model here has taken a vintage coat from the Thirties,
and added shoes entirely from leaves. She says her style is
about embracing your womanly powers.
I think it works!

They say denim will rule seven
days a week this Spring/Summer 2011.
That makes my life a lot easier :)

Did you know that Livia Firth...lucky
woman that she is, Mrs. Colin Firth,
has her own blog?
